Atieno is further accused of engaging in controlling or coercive behaviour towards Buchanan over a period spanning from late 2015 to mid-2018.
During this time, he allegedly restricted various aspects of her personal life, including monitoring her mail, managing her finances, controlling her access to the gym and showers, and forbidding her from wearing red lipstick.
Prosecutors say these actions caused her significant emotional distress and disrupted her daily life, and that Atieno either knew or should have known the serious impact of his behaviour.
Further, Atieno also faces six separate charges for allegedly violating a non-molestation order. Two of the breaches relate to posting sensitive information about Buchanan online on 18 and 20 July 2024.
The remaining four charges involve sending her emails on August 2, November 19, December 19, and December 23, 2024, in defiance of the court order.
The 39-year-old, who previously played for Luton Town during their time in the Conference Premier League in the 2010–2011 season, appeared via video link from HMP Wormwood Scrubs, a prison where he was being held, dressed in a suit and tie.
He was not required to enter any pleas during the hearing, held at Southwark by Harrow Crown Court in London, where Judge Ian Bourne KC granted him conditional bail.
As part of his bail conditions, Atieno was required to surrender his passport.
"There must not be any contact either directly or indirectly with the complainant Keisha Buchanan. That means any form of contact, whether it be by email or other sort of social media messaging system - any contact at all," ruled the judge, according to Sky Sports.
Atieno will take a plea on the matter on August 22, while his trial has been scheduled for August 2026.
